Tech giant Google has announced a $5.8 million investment aimed at advancing AI skilling initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa. The company says this funding will support programs empowering individuals across the region with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.

This initiative, according to Google, aligns with its goal of fostering a deeper understanding of AI across African society, ensuring broader participation in the ongoing technological revolution. The investment will be directed toward programs that enable workers from various industries to harness AI tools effectively, empowering them with essential skills to navigate an increasingly AI-centric landscape.

Google outlined key programs under the initiative, which include:

1. AI Safety and Ethics for Teens: Educating young people on responsible AI use and understanding its potential societal impacts.

2. Foundational AI Skills for Non-Profit Leaders: Equipping non-profit organizations with essential AI skills to enhance their impact and address social challenges.

3. AI Training for the Public Sector: Providing government workers with AI skills to improve public services and policymaking.

Google underscored its commitment to Africa’s burgeoning AI ecosystem, noting its ongoing investments in research, development, and infrastructure.

The company highlighted its Google Research Africa centers in Accra, Ghana, and Nairobi, Kenya, which are dedicated to developing innovative AI solutions for African challenges and contributing to global advancements.

Among the projects is “Open Buildings,” an AI tool that identifies and maps buildings across Africa, providing data crucial for urban planning, disaster response, and socio-economic analysis.

Furthermore, Google’s newly opened Product Development Center in Nairobi is focused on creating Africa-specific products, such as advancements in voice search for African languages and a low-bandwidth HTML5 gaming platform already used by over a million daily active users.

Recognizing that partnerships are vital to achieving its vision for Africa’s AI future, Google is collaborating with governments, non-profits, educational institutions, and private sector players to build an inclusive AI ecosystem.

In Nigeria, Google is working with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) to equip Nigerians with essential AI skills.

This support extends to Nigeria’s 3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) program, educational initiatives introducing AI to teenagers, and an equity-free accelerator fund for Nigerian AI startups. Additionally, Google will be training Nigerian policymakers to craft responsible AI policies.

This commitment builds on Google’s 2021 pledge of $1 billion to enhance Africa’s digital economy, which includes initiatives like improved internet access and support for local entrepreneurs. Part of that investment materialized in 2022 with the arrival of the Equiano fibre-optic cable in Nigeria, expected to boost Nigeria’s internet penetration by 7% by 2025.

With its latest commitment, Google continues to drive digital transformation across Africa, empowering communities and fostering the continent’s role in the global AI landscape.
