The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, has directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to ensure that suspects are not detained beyond 24 hours without a valid court order or other lawful authority.
Sanusi issued the directive during a supervisory tour of the Metro and Life Camp Area Commands, where he inspected operational activities and assessed the conduct, discipline and performance of police personnel.
The Commissioner specifically cautioned officers across the Abuja metropolitan police divisions against prolonged and unlawful detention of suspects, stressing the need to uphold due process and respect the fundamental rights of members of the public.
He urged DPOs and other personnel to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, professionalism and discipline, while ensuring that policing activities remained consistent with the law.
Sanusi also emphasised the importance of neatness and proper appearance among personnel, noting that discipline and professionalism should be reflected not only in officers’ conduct but also in their appearance while on duty.
As part of efforts to reinforce the standard expected of personnel, the Commissioner presented kits to officers to support a smart and professional appearance during operations.
During the tour, Sanusi also presented awards of excellence to the DPOs of Central Police Station and Life Camp Police Station in recognition of their dedication to duty and outstanding performance.
The Commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to strengthening professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights in policing across the nation’s capital.
