The Kano State Government has requested additional diphtheria vaccines from the Federal Government as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the disease in affected communities.

The request comes amid renewed concern over diphtheria in the state. The Kano State House of Assembly recently called for urgent intervention after more than 50 children were reportedly killed by the disease in Rano Local Government Area.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) had earlier pledged to facilitate Kano’s request through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). The state’s Commissioner for Health said additional vaccines were needed to expand immunisation in affected communities.

Kano has been one of the states hardest hit by Nigeria’s diphtheria outbreak. Between March 2022 and March 2026, the state health ministry reported more than 31,900 suspected cases and over 1,260 deaths, with children accounting for most of the fatalities.

Previous vaccination campaigns have reached hundreds of thousands of children. In June 2026 alone, a campaign supported by Médecins Sans Frontières and the Kano Ministry of Health vaccinated 486,948 children across 20 wards.
