The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Shekwolo, has sparked controversy after telling residents who do not support the All Progressives Congress to leave the council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shekwolo made the statement in a video circulating on social media on Tuesday while addressing his followers and constituents.
The council chairman said his position was informed by what he described as the developmental interventions of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Kuje.
He argued that residents benefiting from the administration’s projects should not subsequently vote against the APC at the 2027 elections.
“I have said in my area council, it’s either you are doing APC or leave the area council; I’m not hiding that. With confidence, I’m saying it.
“You know why, I cannot have President and Minister doing what they are doing and on the day of election, you will want to match me. It’s either you are with us, or you are out,” Shekwolo said.
The remarks have raised concerns over the use of inflammatory political rhetoric by public officials as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development comes amid renewed scrutiny of statements by political actors considered capable of heightening political tensions or undermining citizens’ freedom to support parties of their choice.
A recent controversy in Osun State involved Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, who faced criticism over comments concerning members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
In a video circulated on social media, Fadahunsi, while addressing APC supporters in Ilesa, was heard allegedly threatening members of the Accord Party.
The remarks drew condemnation from political actors and civil society groups, while Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke called for the senator’s arrest and investigation.
Fadahunsi subsequently denied advocating violence, explaining that his comments had been misconstrued and that he meant the APC would defeat the Accord Party through votes rather than physically attack its members.
The senator was later invited and questioned by the Osun State Police Command over the remarks.
The latest comments by the Kuje council chairman have similarly drawn attention to the tone of political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly concerns that statements by political leaders could heighten tensions and interfere with citizens’ right to freely choose their preferred political parties and candidates.
Shekwolo was elected chairman of Kuje Area Council on the APC platform in the February 2026 FCT Area Council election. He polled 17,269 votes, according to results announced by the returning officer.
