The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill that would place conditions on financial assistance to Nigeria, requiring the country to demonstrate stronger action against terrorism before part of the aid can be released.
Under the proposed legislation, 50 per cent of US assistance earmarked for Nigeria would remain unavailable until the US Secretary of State certifies that the Nigerian government is taking effective steps to prevent violent attacks, protect affected communities and hold perpetrators accountable. The bill also calls for greater support for victims of violence and the safe return and resettlement of displaced persons.
The measure forms part of the US fiscal year 2027 appropriations process and still requires further legislative steps before it can become law. Supporters of the proposal say it is intended to encourage stronger action against insecurity, while its future remains subject to the US legislative process.
