More than 1,100 people have been killed and at least N7.8 billion paid as ransom in Nigeria amid a sharp rise in kidnapping incidents, according to a new report.
The report revealed that kidnapping cases increased by 66 per cent, highlighting the worsening security situation and the growing financial burden imposed on victims and their families.
Thousands of Nigerians have reportedly been affected by kidnapping incidents, with communities across different parts of the country facing persistent threats from criminal groups.
The surge has also raised concerns over the effectiveness of existing security measures, as families continue to resort to ransom payments to secure the release of abducted relatives.
Security experts and stakeholders have repeatedly called for stronger intelligence gathering, improved inter-agency coordination and more effective measures to tackle the networks responsible for kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The latest figures underscore the scale of Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis and the urgent need for sustained efforts to protect citizens and dismantle criminal networks.
