Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has challenged the Nigeria Police Force to charge him to court if it believes his allegations about police officers and kidnappers are false.

The development followed a statement by the police inviting Otse to provide evidence for his claim that some officers manning checkpoints on major highways identify wealthy travellers and allegedly pass their information to kidnappers and bandits.

The police described the allegation as serious, unsubstantiated and damaging to the institution, while asking VeryDarkMan to produce any evidence supporting his claims.

In response, the activist challenged the police to take legal action against him, saying he would present his evidence in court if the matter was brought before a judge.

The Force said any credible evidence presented would be investigated and that officers found to have compromised their duties would face disciplinary measures and prosecution where appropriate.

The police also defended officers deployed to checkpoints, saying they are tasked with preventing crime and protecting citizens and have themselves faced attacks from kidnappers, terrorists and other violent criminals.
