Chelsea are in talks to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with the Italian club prepared to consider a transfer if its €40m (£34.3m) valuation is met.
The 18-year-old first attracted Chelsea’s attention during negotiations for Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra in July.
Ahanor, who primarily operates as a left-back, joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer for a reported €16m, with a further €4m potentially payable in add-ons.
The teenager enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign in Bergamo, making 28 Serie A appearances and establishing himself as a regular starter despite his age.
He also gained European experience after making his Champions League debut in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge in September.
His performances have attracted attention from the Italian national team, with Ahanor receiving a call-up in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece.
Chelsea’s interest is in line with the club’s continued recruitment of young players viewed as having significant long-term potential. However, the Premier League side would have to meet Atalanta’s €40m asking price to complete the deal.
