The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has commenced a 7MW solar power project at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano State, in a landmark intervention aimed at guaranteeing uninterrupted electricity supply for one of Nigeria’s foremost healthcare institutions.

The project, executed under the leadership of the ECN Director-General, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, followed a comprehensive energy audit that exposed the rising cost of diesel and the risks of the hospital’s dependence on the national grid. In response, the ECN, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology led by Chief Uche Nnaji, designed and implemented the project to secure the hospital’s energy future.

The intervention comes at a critical time, as AKTH recently suffered prolonged power outages that resulted in the tragic loss of lives in its Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Abdullahi noted that the incident further strengthened the Commission’s resolve to provide sustainable energy solutions to vital institutions.

“This installation ensures that such tragedies are prevented in the future and that critical medical services can operate without fear of disruption,” the ECN boss stated.

He added that the project is a practical demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places emphasis on people-centered energy transition. According to him, the Commission is committed to extending similar solutions to hospitals, schools, and other critical institutions nationwide.

“This is not just about powering institutions; it is about saving lives, restoring confidence, and securing a brighter energy future for Nigerians,” Dr. Abdullahi affirmed.
