Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will retain the club’s captaincy despite recent tensions between the pair following the team’s disappointing performances.
Carrick reaffirmed his confidence in the Portuguese midfielder ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League encounter with Chelsea on Saturday, insisting that Fernandes remains committed to the club and determined to help improve its fortunes.
The decision follows a period of uncertainty after Fernandes was left on the bench throughout United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. The midfielder had reportedly questioned Carrick’s tactics following the club’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League the previous week.
The disagreement raised questions about Fernandes’ relationship with the manager and whether the midfielder would retain the armband he has worn since being appointed captain in 2023.
However, the pair held discussions at the club’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday in an effort to resolve their differences and refocus on the team’s immediate challenges.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture, Carrick dismissed suggestions that Fernandes could lose the captaincy, describing him as an important figure in the dressing room and a key leader within the squad.
“He’s an important player for this group. He has been and he will be,” Carrick said.
The United manager also maintained that Fernandes remained fully committed to the club and was eager to contribute to its recovery.
“He’s fully committed to this football club; he’s fully committed to making things better. There are absolutely no issues with that,” he added.
Carrick explained that his decision to leave Fernandes out of the starting line-up against Bournemouth was based on what he considered best for the team in that particular match, rather than an attempt to undermine the midfielder’s leadership.
The manager’s remarks suggest that the disagreement has been addressed internally, with Fernandes expected to return to contention for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Carrick continues to face mounting pressure over Manchester United’s poor run of form. The club have gone eight matches without a victory, marking their worst sequence since the 2015/2016 season and leaving the manager’s position under scrutiny.
United’s hierarchy reportedly considered the manager’s future following the latest setbacks but opted to give him another opportunity to turn the situation around.
Despite the uncertainty, Carrick insisted that he did not require assurances from the club’s leadership regarding his job security.
“I don’t need any assurances from anyone,” he said, adding that he understood the responsibilities attached to managing the club.
“I’m here to do my job. I’m here to do the best for the team, and I’m desperate to make us better and improve things.”
Manchester United will now turn their attention to Saturday’s clash against Chelsea, with Carrick seeking a response from his players and an end to the club’s winless run.
With Fernandes’ captaincy confirmed, the immediate focus shifts to whether the team can translate the renewed understanding between the manager and his skipper into improved performances on the pitch.
