Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his illustrious career with the national team.
The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, following a reported fallout with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time during the Nations League campaign.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut for Portugal in 2003 at the age of 18, leaves the national team as its all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward made 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring a record 146 goals.
His international career spanned more than two decades, during which he captained Portugal to victory at the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
His retirement announcement comes after tensions reportedly emerged between him and Jesus last month, following the coach’s decision not to feature him in a Nations League fixture, prompting the veteran forward to leave the team’s camp.
Ronaldo’s departure marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in football history, with his records and achievements leaving an enduring legacy in Portuguese and world football.
