The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected allegations by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that it is responsible for the hunger and economic hardship confronting Nigerians, urging the ruling party to stop shifting blame and take responsibility for the country’s challenges.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated this on Monday in Abuja while reacting to comments by his APC counterpart, Felix Morka, who blamed the opposition party for the country’s prevailing economic difficulties.

The opposition party also faulted President Bola Tinubu’s reported remarks during the flag-off of his 2027 re-election campaign in Kaduna, where he attributed the hunger and poverty facing Nigerians to opposition politicians.

In a statement, Mohammed described the comments as attempts by the APC-led administration to evade responsibility and divert public attention from the economic challenges confronting the country.

“Our message to the APC is simple: stop the blame game and start taking responsibility. Nigerians deserve solutions, not excuses,” he said.

He maintained that the government in power must address the country’s challenges through concrete, measurable and sustainable policies capable of providing meaningful relief to citizens.

The PDP spokesperson challenged the APC to explain its plans for making food affordable, supporting farmers, strengthening local food production, creating jobs, improving security, fighting corruption and reducing transportation costs.

He also called on the ruling party to outline measures for improving electricity supply and restoring the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

While acknowledging some achievements of the Tinubu administration, Mohammed rejected attempts to use the PDP’s 16 years in government between 1999 and 2015 as a blanket justification for the shortcomings of the current administration.

He stressed that recognising genuine achievements by the present government should not be interpreted as endorsing all its policies or accepting efforts to transfer responsibility for current economic difficulties to previous administrations.

“After more than 10 years of APC in office, Nigerians deserve answers, not excuses,” Mohammed said.

He argued that although the country’s economic history could provide context for its present difficulties, previous administrations could not serve as a permanent shield against accountability.

According to him, every government must be assessed based on its policies, decisions, achievements and, most importantly, the living conditions of the people.

The PDP spokesman further maintained that Nigerians were more concerned about affordable food, economic stability, improved security and better living conditions than political exchanges between rival parties.

He expressed confidence that Nigerians would judge political parties by their records, policies and commitment to public welfare.

Mohammed added that the PDP remained confident that the growing demand for improved governance and better living conditions could strengthen the party’s prospects of returning to power.

He urged President Tinubu and the APC to focus on addressing the country’s economic challenges rather than repeatedly blaming previous administrations for the hardship experienced by Nigerians.
