The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to publicly apologise to airport workers and pay a ₦25,000 fine over what he described as a breach of parking regulations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement issued after an internal investigation, Keyamo said CCTV footage reviewed by the ministry showed that Obi’s vehicle was left unattended in a restricted drop-off zone at the airport’s domestic terminal on July 4, prompting security personnel to clamp it in line with standard operating procedures.
According to the minister, the investigation found that airport officials were unaware the vehicle belonged to Obi and acted solely on security grounds, noting that unattended vehicles in restricted airport areas pose a significant security risk.
Keyamo further alleged that after the vehicle was clamped, Obi personally contacted an airport manager and requested its release without paying the prescribed fine, a request that was eventually granted.
He accused Obi of misrepresenting the incident as political persecution and said the airport workers involved had merely carried out their lawful duties.
The minister demanded that Obi tender an unreserved public apology to the affected airport personnel and voluntarily pay the ₦25,000 parking fine within one week, warning that failure to do so would prompt the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to take further action.
