Osun Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has said former Governor Gboyega Oyetola was advised against contesting against him in the 2022 governorship election because he would lose.

Adeleke stated this on Tuesday during a town hall debate organised by Arise TV, where he also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of worsening the hardship faced by residents of the state.

Adeleke said he had friends within the APC who informed him about Oyetola’s intention to seek re-election, adding that some party members discouraged him from contesting because they believed he could not defeat him.

“I have friends in the APC who informed me of Oyetola’s desire to run for a second term.

He was discouraged because they knew he could not defeat me,” Adeleke said.

He further alleged that the APC subsequently supported a proxy candidate in the election, claiming that the arrangement was intended to allow Oyetola to retain influence over the state government.

“He brought in a proxy so he could control him from the Government House,” the governor alleged.

Adeleke also criticised the APC’s administration of the state, saying its policies had subjected residents to hardship.

“The APC has only brought hardship to the people of Osun,” he said.

The governor, while highlighting his administration’s achievements, said his government had cleared a backlog of pension obligations amounting to about N80 billion.

“Today, I have cleared pensioners’ backlog to the tune of N80 billion,” Adeleke said.
