Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he remains the “General Commander” of the political structure in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he returned amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Rivers State governor maintained that he does not need to occupy the office of governor to retain political influence in the state.

“You do not need to be governor before you can be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry; therefore, I am in charge. So also in FCT,” Wike said.

He said his return to Rivers was not an indication that he had abandoned his responsibilities in Abuja, explaining that he was in the state to reconnect with his political base and assess developments.

Wike also dismissed any suggestion that he would remain politically inactive ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that he would continue to engage in activities aimed at protecting his political interests and those of his supporters.

“Politics, of course, this is the time. You want me to fold my hand for Atiku to come and win the election?” he asked.

The FCT minister further cited his record in office as evidence of his capacity to deliver, referencing projects executed during his tenure as Rivers governor and his ongoing administration of the FCT.

Wike’s comments come amid heightened political manoeuvring across Rivers State and the wider political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
