The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal products manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, following the discovery of bitters allegedly bearing a falsified registration number belonging to a cough syrup.
The agency disclosed the development on Wednesday, October 21, stating that the operation followed an investigative process triggered by a report published by The Guardian on October 10 concerning herbal products carrying questionable NAFDAC registration numbers.
According to the agency, its investigative team conducted surveillance before raiding the facility, where it discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing registration number A7-1827L.
However, verification through NAFDAC’s Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) revealed that the registration number was assigned to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating its fraudulent use on the herbal products.
NAFDAC said the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation, while the facility’s manager was arrested for further interrogation.
The latest discovery underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal manufacturing activities and the circulation of products bearing falsified regulatory information, which could mislead consumers and raise public health concerns.
The agency urged Nigerians to provide credible information on suspected illegal manufacturing operations and other regulatory violations.
Members of the public can contact the NAFDAC Call Centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322.
The operation comes amid a series of enforcement actions by the agency against suspected counterfeit alcoholic beverages in Lagos. On October 14, NAFDAC reportedly seized counterfeit alcoholic drinks valued at more than ₦2 billion at the International Trade Fair Complex, following an earlier seizure of products estimated at ₦300 million at Ile-Epo Market.
NAFDAC has continued to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations as part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure that regulated products comply with established safety and registration requirements.
