The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has prohibited its personnel from providing escorts for politicians and participating in political convoys ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive was issued by the Zonal Commanding Officer of RS6, Assistant Corps Marshal Abimbola Owolabi, during her maiden official visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday.
Owolabi directed officers deployed to political campaign venues to concentrate strictly on traffic control, ensuring the free flow of vehicles and preventing road crashes.
She warned that FRSC patrol vehicles, sirens and other operational resources must not be deployed for political engagements or private ceremonies, including weddings and funeral processions.
The zonal commander stressed that personnel must operate within their statutory responsibilities and avoid activities capable of compromising the professionalism and integrity of the corps.
She also cautioned officers against extortion, corruption and other forms of misconduct, noting that unethical behaviour could undermine public confidence in the agency.
Owolabi urged personnel to demonstrate accountability, discipline and professionalism in their interactions with motorists while avoiding unnecessary confrontations during enforcement operations.
On road safety, she called for intensified public enlightenment campaigns, improved highway patrols and prompt emergency response to minimise accidents and fatalities.
She further advocated stronger collaboration with private operators to facilitate the evacuation of broken-down vehicles and the removal of obstructions from major highways.
The FRSC official also emphasised the importance of proper documentation of operational requests, personnel welfare and access to healthcare services.
She encouraged members of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA) to continue supporting their spouses in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The directive comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
