Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has declined to open his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial against him, insisting that there is no valid charge before the court.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, Kanu who chose to represent himself after dismissing his legal team told the court that a thorough review of his case file revealed no lawful basis for the prosecution.
“Join me in praising God. I have gone through my case file and there is no charge against me,” Kanu stated.
He argued that the prosecution had failed to anchor its case on any existing law in Nigeria, challenging the court to identify any such provision.
“There is no extant law in this country upon which the prosecution can predicate the charges against me. If there’s any, let my Lord read it out to me,” he said.
Kanu therefore urged the court to either release him immediately or grant him bail, maintaining that he could not be made to defend charges that, in his view, do not legally exist.
