Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has recalled his longstanding relationship with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, revealing that they shared a bunk bed during their boarding school days 49 years ago.
Otedola disclosed this on Monday in a post on his X account following a dinner he hosted in honour of Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State election.
Describing Hamzat as a man of integrity, Otedola praised his character, citing honesty, sincerity, fairness and strong moral principles as qualities that have defined their relationship over the years.
He wrote: “Yesterday, I hosted dinner in honour of @DrObafemiHamzat, the incoming Governor of Lagos State. A man of the highest integrity, with whom I shared a bunk bed at boarding school 49 years ago.”
The dinner attracted prominent Nigerian business leaders, including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu.
Hamzat emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate in May 2026 after winning the party’s primary ahead of the 2027 general election. He polled 657,917 votes to defeat his challenger, Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal, who secured one vote, according to the announced results.
The Lagos deputy governor, who has held office since 2019 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is seeking to succeed his principal when the latter’s second term expires in 2027.
Otedola’s account of their school days offers a glimpse into a friendship that has endured for nearly five decades, as Hamzat prepares for the forthcoming governorship election.
