The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing growing criticism over the recently released 2026 WASSCE results, with some school administrators and education advocates alleging grading irregularities and technical problems linked to the expanded computer-based examination system.
Some schools reported unexpectedly poor performances among students who had previously performed strongly in internal examinations and other external assessments. One school administrator claimed that students with strong UTME scores and previous examination records were suddenly awarded D7, E8 and F9 grades in core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The concerns have also extended beyond grading itself, with complaints about the CBT environment, recording and processing of candidates’ responses, scoring and result generation. An education organisation has threatened legal action and demanded that relevant examination records be preserved and that affected candidates be given a mechanism to independently challenge their results.
WAEC has defended the integrity of the 2026 results amid the controversy, while the allegations and calls for further investigation continue.
