The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Yekini Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as its new Speaker.
Idiaye, a third-term lawmaker, takes over from Blessing Agbebaku, who resigned as Speaker on Monday amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him. PUNCH reports that 17 of the Assembly’s 24 lawmakers had signed a notice of impeachment on Sunday night.
The emergence of Idiaye was influenced by the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, according to which, when the governor is from Edo Central Senatorial District, the Speaker should come from Edo North. Idiaye, described as the oldest member from Edo North in the Assembly, was subsequently elected Speaker.
