Ferrari’s first fully electric production car, the Ferrari Luce, has sold for a record $40 million at a charity auction during Monterey Car Week in California. The one-off vehicle, known as “Chassis 0,” was sold through RM Sotheby’s, with proceeds going to the Ferrari Foundation to support educational programmes.
The $40 million sale makes it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction, surpassing the previous record of $26 million, set by a bespoke Ferrari Daytona SP3 in 2025.
The Luce made history as Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle. Its launch initially attracted criticism from some traditional Ferrari fans because of its five-seat design and move away from the brand’s traditional combustion-engine identity.
The auctioned car was a highly customised version produced by Ferrari’s Tailor Made division and design centre. Ferrari originally unveiled the Luce at around €550,000 ($638,400), making the $40 million auction price an extraordinary premium for the historic first production chassis.
