Hardship Remark: Only Citizens Can Fix Nigeria, Tinubu Replies Opposition
President Bola Tinubu has declared that he will not be intimidated or distracted by opposition pressure, insisting that his administration remains focused on delivering its reform agenda.
Speaking on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting with leaders and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Tinubu said he was resolute despite criticisms and challenges.
He maintained that he would not back down, recalling the difficult journey through party primaries and the general election, and promising to remain steadfast in office.
According to him, no one else can build the country except its citizens, stressing that he is determined to see through the mandate entrusted to him.
Addressing members of the political mobilisation group, Tinubu assured them of his commitment, stating that he would not abandon the “fight” to implement his policies.
His remarks come amid mounting criticism from opposition figures and some civil society groups over economic hardship and concerns about the pace of reforms. Some critics have even called for his resignation.
Earlier in the week, a former ally and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, criticised the administration, describing its “Renewed Hope” agenda in harsh terms and urging the President to step down over worsening insecurity and economic conditions.
Responding indirectly, Tinubu described his reforms as necessary adjustments to inherited challenges, noting that his administration is building on the foundation of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he referred to as a partner.
He added that governance requires acknowledging shortcomings, making corrections, and moving forward.
The President also urged Nigerians to uphold the rule of law and respect judicial decisions, emphasising the importance of democratic principles, including separation of powers.
Tinubu framed his administration’s mission as a generational responsibility to tackle poverty, expand opportunities, and strengthen democracy.
The Renewed Hope Ambassadors, inaugurated in February, were established to mobilise grassroots support for the administration’s policies and the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of future elections.
Thursday’s meeting served as a follow-up engagement, where Tinubu said he was encouraged by the group’s reports and expressed readiness to continue pushing his agenda.
The meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, and senior officials of the APC, among others.
