The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned Nigerians against consuming fruits ripened with calcium carbide.

The Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Olatunji Bello, gave the warning on Monday at a one-day sensitisation programme on food quality standards, organised by the agency in Ado-Ekiti.

Bello, who was represented by the agency’s Director of Quality Assurance, Mrs Nkechi Mba, frowned at the increasing sale of adulterated and contaminated foods in the markets.

The FCCPC boss lamented that perpetrators of such acts were putting the lives of many innocent Nigerians at great risk.

He promised that the agency would not allow those responsible for such heinous acts to go scot-free.

According to him, the sensitisation programme is the first step towards putting unsuspecting people on alert, and send red signal to “defiant” perpetrators.

He disclosed that a total enforcement of the law has commenced, noting that the agency would not shy away from performing its roles.

Bello said the FCCPC has the statutory responsibility to protect, promote the interest and welfare of consumers at all times.

”The issues of food quality standards, safety and fair business practices are more pressing than ever, but we continue to alarming trends.

”Such alarming trends include principally, the forceful ripening of fruits, using harmful chemicals, such as calcium carbide, which contains trace amounts of arsenic and phosphorus, both of which are highly toxic to humans.

”These practices not only endanger the lives of millions of Nigerians, but they also erode consumer trust, and sabotage the integrity of our food systems,” he stated.

He said that the agency was collaborating with other agencies, like the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control(NAFDAC), Standard Organisation of Nigeria(SON), Federal Ministries of Health and Agriculture to ensure strict compliance.

He advised consumers to also watch carefully, what they buy in the markets, or farms.

To prove his point, he disclosed that through regular market surveys, the FCCPC had been able to intervene in numerous cases, involving hazardous food practices, and had to shut down facilities, imposed sanctions, and prosecute offenders, where necessary.

Speaking, the agency’s Director, Consumer and Business Education, Mr Yahaya Kudan, said the sensitisation programme was a testament to the agency’s dedication to educating and empowering consumers, farmers, vendors and other stakeholders, involved in the food supply chain.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that stakeholders at the event included NAFDAC, SON, Federal and Ekiti State Ministries of Agriculture, Health and Trade, Commerce and Investment, as well as Ekiti Consumer Protection Commission.

The stakeholders also included All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Yam Farmers Association and Cassava Growers

  • Jilli Airstrike: Supporters Of Terrorists Will Be Treated As Bandits, Defence Minister Warns Defence Minister Christopher Musa has warned that supporters of terrorists would be treated as criminals. He said this on Monday as he reacted to the airstrike carried out by the Nigerian Air Force airstrike in Jilli, Borno State, over the weekend. Speaking after an expanded security meeting in Kaduna with the state governor and heads of security agencies, Musa said the operation sends a clear message to those collaborating with terrorist groups. He stressed that anyone found supporting insurgents would face the same consequences as the perpetrators. “A friend of a thief is a thief,” he said, warning civilians against associating with or providing any form of assistance to terrorists. Musa urged residents to steer clear of areas known to be used by insurgents, noting that proximity or collaboration could have grave consequences. The airstrike, carried out near the village of Jilli in Gubio Local Government Area, targeted what the military described as an ISWAP enclave and logistics hub. According to the Nigerian Air Force, the operation was intelligence-driven and aimed at neutralising terror elements and destroying their equipment. However, reports have emerged alleging that the strike may have affected a weekly market in the area, with civilians, including cross-border traders, reportedly among casualties. Musa, however, maintained that the strike should serve as a strong warning to those aiding insurgent activities, reaffirming the military’s resolve to intensify operations against terrorist networks. Air Component of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, conducted a precision air strike on a known terrorist enclave and logistics hub located near the abandoned village of Jilli in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State. Giving an update on the airstrike, the Nigerian Army in a post on its official X handle said, “The successful strike, executed on 11 April 2026, followed sustained intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions over the Bindul–Jilli axis, an area long identified as a major terrorist movement corridor and convergence point for Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists and their collaborators.”
