More than 16,000 children who had never received a diphtheria vaccination were among over 32,000 confirmed diphtheria cases recorded in Kano State since the outbreak began in December 2022, according to the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control, Mohammed Adamu-Abbas.
The state recorded more than 39,000 suspected cases between December 2, 2022 and August 26, 2026, with more than 32,000 subsequently confirmed through laboratory, clinical and epidemiological assessments.
The large proportion of zero-dose children has highlighted the continuing immunisation gap in the state. Health experts have linked the persistence of diphtheria to low vaccination coverage, overcrowding, delayed treatment and limited access to healthcare.
Kano has remained at the centre of Nigeria’s diphtheria outbreak, with the disease disproportionately affecting children. Mass vaccination campaigns have helped reduce transmission, but health authorities continue to push for wider immunisation coverage.
