The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his tenure after the team’s disappointing performance in the tournament.
The decision was announced on Saturday after a meeting of the federation’s Executive Committee in Dakar. According to the FSF, the move followed a comprehensive review of Senegal’s World Cup campaign, which fell short of expectations despite the country’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
Senegal began the tournament with defeats to France and Norway before reviving their hopes with a victory over Iraq to secure a place in the Round of 32. However, the Teranga Lions were eliminated after squandering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium after extra time.
Thiaw’s future had come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks amid reports of unrest within the squad. Midfielder Pape Gueye had earlier indicated he would step away from the national team while the coach remained in charge, further intensifying pressure on the federation to make a decision.
The FSF said the dismissal forms part of efforts to reposition the national team ahead of future competitions. The federation is expected to announce an interim arrangement or a permanent replacement in the coming days, with former France international and Dakar-born coach Patrick Vieira among the names being linked with the role.
