Nigeria has the second-longest road network in Africa, with about 195,000 kilometres of roadway coverage, according to 2026 data published by Global Firepower.

The ranking places Nigeria behind South Africa, which has the continent’s longest road network at approximately 750,000 kilometres.

Ethiopia ranks third with 180,000 kilometres, while Kenya occupies fourth position with 161,452 kilometres of roadway coverage.

The Democratic Republic of Congo ranks fifth with 152,373 kilometres, followed by Tanzania with 145,203 kilometres and Mali with 139,107 kilometres.

Algeria, Zimbabwe and South Sudan complete the top 10, with road networks of 112,696km, 97,267km and 90,200km respectively.

Globally, Nigeria ranks 28th, behind the United States, India, China, Brazil, Russia and other countries with larger road networks. South Africa is the only other African country in the global top 20, ranking 11th.

Global Firepower said the figures measure total usable or useful roadway coverage and form part of its 2026 logistics ranking.

The organisation noted that road networks are an important indicator of infrastructure development, providing access to industrial sectors, terminals and ports.

However, the ranking measures the length of road networks rather than their quality, condition or the proportion that is paved.

Nigeria’s position highlights the enormous scale of its transportation infrastructure while also underscoring the importance of maintaining and upgrading the country’s roads to support economic activity and connectivity.

With road transportation carrying a significant share of movement across the country, experts and stakeholders continue to emphasise the need for sustained investment in road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance.
