The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered about N1.23 trillion and $684 million from individuals and entities linked to financial crimes over a 32-month period, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has disclosed.

Olukoyede said the recoveries formed part of the commission’s intensified efforts to combat corruption, financial crimes and other forms of economic crime in Nigeria.

According to him, the figures demonstrate the scale of financial crime investigations being handled by the anti-graft agency and the increasing focus on recovering proceeds of illicit activities.

The EFCC chairman said the commission has continued to strengthen its investigative and recovery mechanisms while pursuing individuals suspected of involvement in financial crimes.

He noted that asset recovery remains an important component of the commission’s mandate, particularly in cases involving the diversion of public funds, fraud, money laundering and other economic offences.

Olukoyede also stressed the importance of improving Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and strengthening collaboration among relevant government agencies to ensure that criminal proceeds are traced, recovered and returned to legitimate use.

The disclosure comes amid renewed scrutiny of Nigeria’s efforts to tackle corruption and recover assets allegedly acquired through illicit means.

The latest recovery figures highlight the substantial financial resources involved in economic crimes and the scale of the EFCC’s ongoing recovery operations.

The commission has continued to call for stronger institutional support, improved intelligence gathering and closer cooperation with domestic and international partners in its fight against financial crimes.
