The Federal Government has suspended the planned increase in examination fees for candidates of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
The decision followed widespread public concern over the proposed adjustment, with many stakeholders warning that higher examination fees would place an additional financial burden on Nigerian families.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the suspension after consultations with relevant agencies, stressing that the government remains committed to ensuring that access to secondary school examinations remains affordable for all eligible candidates.
According to the minister, the proposed fee review has been put on hold pending further discussions with stakeholders to explore alternative solutions that will address funding challenges without negatively affecting students and their parents.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of education while ensuring that examination costs remain within the reach of ordinary Nigerians.
The development has been welcomed by education stakeholders, parents and students, many of whom had expressed concerns over the impact a fee increase could have on access to public examinations.
