An AIDS Healthcare Foundation Senior Manager for Prevention Programmes, Taofeek Adeleye, has advised Nigerians against using palm oil, vegetable oil and other oil-based substances as lubricants during sexual activity.
Adeleye gave the warning in Lagos on Thursday during a national training for media personnel on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis organised by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and the World Health Organisation.
He specifically advised people who use condoms to choose water-based lubricants, warning against the use of palm oil, vegetable oil and similar substances.
The expert also stressed the importance of using condoms of the appropriate size and taking necessary precautions before engaging in sexual activity to reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Adeleye urged men to remain conscious of their sexual environment and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
He further addressed the use of saliva when a lubricant is unavailable, advising individuals against using saliva from another person.
According to him, if saliva must be used, an individual should use their own saliva rather than saliva from another person.
The health expert’s warning comes as Nigeria continues to expand combination HIV prevention measures, including PrEP, condom use, HIV testing and treatment.
Adeleye encouraged Nigerians to make informed choices about sexual health and to adopt safer practices as part of efforts to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
