The Federal Government has reversed its decision to reopen schools across the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It also withdrew the participation of students of schools under the control of the federal government in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) earlier scheduled for August 5th and September 5th.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu made the announcement after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Adamu said reopening of schools was unsafe for children given the rising cases of the pandemic.

“I appeal to state governments that have announced schools’ resumption to reconsider it. I think it’s not safe. Let’s protect our children,” he said.

Recall the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, had announced on Monday that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has fixed the commencement of the examination for August 5.

But the minister of education said WAEC cannot determine the resumption date of schools in the country.

He further appealed to the examination body to reschedule the examination because of the pandemic.
