Gal Pissetzky, top Chicago lawyer and legal representative to Ramon Olorunwa Abass, popularly called Hushpuppi, has denied reports he has been rejected by the suspected cyber criminal.
MERIDIAN SPY reported earlier, the 37-year-old cyber-crime suspect rejected the continued legal service of Pissetzky and settled for a government lawyer after his case was transferred to another district.
It was learnt from the commitment letter sent to California where the Instagram socialite would be transferred to, that the suspected internet fraudster had refused to retain Pissetzky as his attorney, requesting that a court-appointed counsel be assigned to him.
But, the top Chicago lawyer denied the report, stating that he is still the legal representative to Hushpuppi.
“I am still representing him. I will be in California for the case,” he said.
Reacting to the rejection of the bail application filed by him on his client’s behalf, Pissetzky told The Punch Hushpuppi still stands a good chance of being acquitted.
“Our legal system is quite different from yours. That he was denied bail does not mean his case is getting worse,” he said.
“Actually, I think it’s getting better. I am not, however, allowed to comment on the facts of the case.
“There is no new evidence put forward by the FBI at this point. Whatever news report that suggests things are getting worse for him is not true.”
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai and extradited to the US.
He is facing criminal charges for “conspiring to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from Business Email Compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams, including schemes targeting a U.S. law firm, a foreign bank and an English Premier League soccer club.
If convicted of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, the self-acclaimed Instagram influencer would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
