The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disclose the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty since his administration assumed office in May 2023.
Obi also called on the President to account for the number of out-of-school children who have returned to school and functional primary healthcare centres constructed under his administration.
The former Anambra State governor made the demands in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, titled, “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability.”
He questioned how the Federal Government had utilised resources available to it, including the ₦15.8 trillion he said was saved from the removal of the petrol subsidy, more than $100 billion in loans, increased tax revenues and additional government earnings reportedly exceeding revenue targets.
Obi’s remarks followed Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom State, where the President spent the night outside Lagos and Abuja. While acknowledging the visit, the former governor urged him to extend similar engagements to other states and interact directly with Nigerians.
“I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria’s states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality, and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom,” Obi said.
He, however, maintained that Nigerians deserved a detailed account of the administration’s performance, particularly in poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and national security.
“Nigerians deserve to know how many that were pulled out of poverty within this period, how many out-of-school children were returned to school, and how many functional primary healthcare centres you have built,” he stated.
Obi also recalled Tinubu’s campaign promise on electricity, questioning the administration’s progress in addressing the country’s persistent power supply challenges.
The NDC presidential candidate further urged the President to demonstrate how government revenues and borrowings had translated into tangible improvements in the living conditions of Nigerians.
His comments come amid ongoing public debate over the economic reforms of the Tinubu administration, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy, rising living costs, inflation and the country’s debt profile.
