President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned political aspirants seeking to lead Nigeria against making unrealistic campaign promises without clearly explaining how such commitments would be funded and sustained.
The President maintained that anyone aspiring to govern the country must demonstrate financial responsibility by presenting credible plans for implementing their proposed policies without placing unnecessary burdens on Nigerians and future generations.
Tinubu made the remarks on Sunday in a statement shared on his official X account, where he emphasised the importance of balancing immediate public needs with long-term economic sustainability.
According to him, political leaders must resist the temptation to make attractive promises whose financial implications could undermine the country’s future.
He explained that his administration’s decisions, including difficult economic measures, were guided by the responsibility to address present challenges while safeguarding opportunities for future generations.
The President further challenged those seeking public office to explain the financial implications of their proposals, identify practical implementation strategies and demonstrate how such programmes would remain sustainable.
Speaking on government interventions, Tinubu referenced the experiences of several Nigerians, including Blessing, Ada, Abigail and Kabir, as examples of how public investments could improve citizens’ lives.
He also acknowledged the concerns raised by another Nigerian, Emmanuel, noting that considerable work remained to be done in expanding access to essential services.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving affordable transportation nationwide, stressing that the Federal Government would continue collaborating with state governments to extend such services to more communities.
He maintained that responsible governance required not only addressing the immediate difficulties confronting citizens but also ensuring that today’s decisions did not create greater economic challenges for future generations.
