The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) will on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, commission the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, Osara (BARECKS) in Kogi State, a landmark institution established to develop indigenous technical capacity and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.
The Commission disclosed this in a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, noting that the college is designed to equip Nigerians, particularly young people and rural residents, with practical skills in renewable energy technologies, including solar energy installation, operation and maintenance.
According to the statement, the commissioning ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, and will be hosted by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is expected to grace the event alongside Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON; the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo; the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh; and other senior government officials, development partners and stakeholders in the energy sector.
The ECN stated that BARECKS will serve as a practical training hub for renewable energy technologies, strengthening Nigeria’s technical workforce, promoting innovation and expanding opportunities for employment in the country’s growing clean energy industry.
The Commission further noted that the project is expected to support the Federal Government’s drive to improve energy access, deepen local content in the renewable energy value chain and produce a skilled workforce capable of driving sustainable development across the country.
The Barefoot Renewable Energy College is one of the flagship initiatives of the Energy Commission of Nigeria aimed at bridging the technical skills gap in the renewable energy sector and positioning Nigeria to harness the economic and environmental benefits of the global clean energy transition.
