Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has directed his aides who reported social commentator and businessman Denis Odama to the police to withdraw their complaint against him.
Odama had reportedly been detained for about a week following a complaint filed by some of the governor’s aides over comments made against the state government. The governor’s intervention came amid growing attention surrounding the case.
Otu said the decision was taken in the interest of peace and leadership, directing the aides involved to discontinue the matter and allow Odama to regain his freedom.
The development has drawn attention to the relationship between government officials and critics, particularly the need to protect the space for constructive criticism and freedom of expression while addressing potentially defamatory or inflammatory statements through lawful means.
