Nigeria has recorded 16 new cases of coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number to 254.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC made the announcement via its verified twitter handle on Tuesday.

Of the 16 cases, 10 were confirmed in Lagos, two in Abuja, two in Oyo, one in Delta and one in Katsina.

NCDC tweeted: “Sixteen new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria: 10 in Lagos, 2 in the FCT, 2 in Oyo, 1 in Delta and 1 in Katsina.”

One new death was also recorded in the country just as discharged cases rose to 44. But it is unclear where the death had occurred as only the figure was stated without the location. NCDC only noted that 44 patients were discharged “with six deaths.”

Hours before the NCDC COVID-19 update, Katsina state had reported the death of a patient who died of complications from the contagion.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina state had disclosed that Aliyu Yakubu, a medical doctor based in Katsina state, died from the complications of COVID-19.

He said the doctor, aged 60, died at the Nigeria Air Force Reference Hospital in Daura, three days ago. Adding that the deceased owned a private hospital in Daura and had visited his Kogi, where he hailed from, and later travelled to Lagos.

Masari said, on returning to the state, Yakubu became ill and was admitted to the hospital, where he died. The deceased’s samples were taken to the NCDC for diagnosis before his death, and he was confirmed positive for coronavirus.

“We have received a bad news of COVID-19. The deceased’s samples showed COVID-19 positive. Before his death, he was also diagnosed with hepatitis and hypertension three years ago,” he stated.

The governor further stated that the state medical response team was in Daura, taking samples of all those that had contact with the doctor before his death.

This was however the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Katsina. The doctor’s death brings to six, the total number of deaths from complications of COVID-19.

To put the records straight, according to NCDC, as at 09:30 pm 7th April, “there are 254 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. 44 have been discharged with six deaths.

A total of 17 states of the federation have recorded cases of the disease. Lagos however remains the state with the highest number of confirmed cases at 130. Abuja follows behind with 50. Others are Osun 20, Oyo 11, Edo 11, Bauchi 6, Akwa Ibom 5, Kaduna 5, Ogun 4, Enugu 2, Ekiti 2, Rivers 2, Benue 1, Ondo 1, Kwara 2, Delta 1, and Katsina 1.
