Vice President Kashim Shettima has called a meeting with several key officials to address the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

Shettima summoned Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu at the Presidential Villa, on Thursday.

Recall that the nation’s oil company, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has jerked petrol, pump prices from N617 to N855 across its retail outlets nationwide.

Meanwhile, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), had earlier, before the recent price hike, disclosed that the NNPC  Limited cannot sustain selling below the landing cost of petroleum products in the country, adding that adjusting pricing strategy for imported fuel by the nation’s oil company would also help the curb smuggling.

The recent price hike has aggravated the suffering of Nigerians as many independent marketers sell above N1,000 per litre, leaving many motorists groaning and calling for urgent intervention from President Bola Ahmed Bola.

In their separate reactions, the major opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), among others, have knocked the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government over the recent pump price, describing it as insensitive to the plight of the citizens.
