Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City after playing a pivotal role in the club’s successful Championship campaign.
Onyeka initially joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford in January and became an integral part of Frank Lampard’s squad as Coventry secured promotion to the English top flight.
The 28-year-old midfielder made 14 Championship appearances during his loan spell, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His lone goal proved decisive in Coventry’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Derby County in April.
Speaking after completing his move to the Coventry Building Society Arena, Onyeka expressed delight at returning to the Premier League with the club.
“I’m really excited for the new season with Coventry. When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry earn promotion to the Premier League.
“I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League.
“I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience. My ambition now is to help the club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.”
The permanent transfer officially takes effect on July 1.
Onyeka departs Brentford after making 87 appearances in all competitions since joining the club from Danish side FC Midtjylland in July 2021. He was Brentford’s first signing following their promotion to the Premier League and featured prominently in his debut campaign as the Bees finished 13th. During that period, he also represented Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
He made 23 league appearances and registered two assists during the 2022/23 season before spending the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Augsburg, where he featured 31 times in the Bundesliga.
Returning to Brentford last season, Onyeka made nine appearances before rejoining Coventry on loan in January. His performances helped the Sky Blues secure promotion, earning him a permanent stay at the club.
Coventry are expected to face Brentford in the Premier League during the 2026/27 season, with Onyeka potentially making an emotional return to the Gtech Community Stadium in February 2027.
