The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has urged military leaders to embrace strategic thinking, jointness and innovation to enhance operational effectiveness and address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

He stressed that synergy among the Armed Forces is no longer optional but a strategic necessity for mission success in today’s complex security environment.

Aneke spoke on Monday while delivering a lecture titled “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective” to participants of Air War Course 12/2026 at the Air Force War College Nigeria, Makurdi.

The participants included senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, as well as officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.

According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Chief said effective military leadership extends beyond command authority to inspiring personnel, shaping institutions and translating national strategic objectives into operational success.

He emphasised that integrated planning and coordinated execution among the Armed Forces enable commanders to achieve results beyond the capability of any single Service.

“Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” the Air Chief said, noting that the integration of airpower with surface forces remains critical to addressing contemporary security challenges.

Aneke said his command philosophy is centred on building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready Air Force through mission-focused training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and sustained operational readiness.

He also stressed the need for future commanders to adopt proactive leadership, saying strategic leadership requires policy foresight rather than reactive decision-making.

Highlighting the human dimension of military capability, the Air Chief urged participants to cultivate ethical leadership, emotional intelligence and a lifelong commitment to professional development.

He further encouraged them to strengthen trust and cooperation across the Services and with partner nations, describing such collaboration as the foundation of successful joint operations.

The lecture ended with an interactive session during which participants exchanged ideas on strategic leadership, interoperability and future warfare, reinforcing the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to developing leaders capable of delivering effective airpower in support of national security objectives.
