Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised the use of state power and political influence during Nigeria’s off-cycle elections, describing the involvement of governors as a threat to the credibility of the electoral process.
Jonathan expressed concern over what he described as the “show of force” by governors during elections, arguing that the power of incumbency can create an uneven playing field for candidates and political parties.
He stressed the need for elections to be conducted in an environment where voters can freely make their choices without intimidation or undue influence.
The former president’s comments come amid renewed discussions over Nigeria’s electoral reforms and the credibility of off-cycle governorship elections.
