FG Sets 6,000MW Power Target by December
The Federal Government has set a target of generating and wheeling 6,000 megawatts of electricity before December 2026, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced in Lagos while commissioning two new 100 MVA transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation.
Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) boasts 8,500MW wheeling capacity, generation currently hovers around 5,000MW. Tegbe said the plan was not only to boost generation but to ensure reliable transmission.
“The objective is to create a power system that can reliably deliver electricity to where it is needed, when it is needed, and at a quality and cost that supports economic activity,” he stated.
The Ijora upgrade replaced two ageing 30 MVA transformers with two modern 100 MVA units, raising installed capacity from 90 MVA to 230 MVA—equivalent to about 184MW.
Tegbe said this represented “an additional 125MW of bulk transmission capacity that will translate into real economic value.”
The minister noted the project would improve supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyigbo, Customs and Ajegunle communities, supporting businesses and millions of consumers within the Eko Disco franchise.
He stressed that transmission infrastructure was critical to President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz explained that the decision to install two 100 MVA transformers, instead of the usual 60 MVA units, reflected Lagos’s growing demand.
He said the project was funded by the World Bank and executed by Shanghai Electric Limited, as part of TCN’s nationwide expansion programme.
Tegbe commended TCN’s improved response to faults, noting that outages were now being fixed within hours.
“I dare say that I’ve not had any issue with either conductor falling over and not being fixed within 24 hours,” he said.
Earlier, the minister also unveiled a 2×60 MVA GIS substation on Apapa Road, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
He reiterated that 20 transmission projects would be commissioned before year-end to strengthen Nigeria’s grid and ensure power generated can be efficiently evacuated.
