President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and other presidential candidates have signed the 2027 National Peace Accord, pledging to conduct issue-based campaigns and reject violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The agreement commits political parties and candidates to shun violence, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation and personal attacks that could undermine the electoral process.
The signing comes as the 2027 presidential campaign officially begins, marking the start of a major political contest involving the incumbent president and several opposition candidates.
The peace committee urged candidates to focus their campaigns on policies and ideas rather than inflammatory rhetoric. Peter Obi also called on Nigerians to reject candidates who violate the agreement, while some opposition figures expressed reservations about whether the pact would be respected in practice.
