Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camaraderie, has reportedly been killed during coordinated attacks on military targets across the country, marking a significant escalation in the West African nation’s security crisis.

The development followed a series of simultaneous assaults on Saturday, including a major attack on Camara’s residence in Kati, a heavily fortified garrison town about 15 kilometres northwest of the capital, Bamako.

According to reports, the attacks were carried out by fighters linked to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in collaboration with Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

Security sources indicated that Camara’s residence was targeted in a suicide car bomb attack, underscoring the scale and coordination of the operation.

Camara, a key figure in Mali’s ruling military establishment, rose to prominence following the coups of 2020 and 2021 that brought the current junta to power. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures within the military leadership and a potential future leader of the country.

Observers say his death represents a major setback for Mali’s armed forces and could have far-reaching implications for the country’s fragile security landscape.

The wave of violence extended beyond Kati, with gunmen launching attacks in several locations, including Bamako, as well as northern cities such as Gao and Kidal, and the central town of Sévaré.

Residents in parts of the north reported continued heavy gunfire and explosions more than 24 hours after the initial assaults, suggesting that security operations were still ongoing.

Security analyst Bulama Bukarti noted that the attacks highlight an emerging alliance between armed groups that were previously adversaries.

“These are groups with different objectives, but they have now found common ground in confronting the Malian state,” he said, warning of potential further battles for control of strategic territories.

The coordinated nature of the attacks has raised concerns about the evolving capabilities of insurgent groups and the growing complexity of Mali’s conflict, which has persisted for over a decade.

International reactions were swift, with the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the United States Bureau of African Affairs condemning the attacks and calling for restraint and stability
