The Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State has adopted Kale Kawu as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The decision was announced on Saturday by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, following consultations with party leaders, stakeholders and governorship aspirants.
Kawu emerged through a consensus arrangement after five aspirants earlier declared interest in contesting the PDP governorship ticket. They include Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan, Olaseni Ibiwoye and Kawu.
According to Saraki, the aspirants agreed to shelve a competitive primary in favour of a consensus candidate to strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
> “The candidate is Engr. Kale Kawu,” Saraki said.
He also praised the other aspirants for stepping down in what he described as a sacrifice for the party’s collective interest.
> “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the other aspirants who, in the supreme interest of our party and state, have graciously stepped down to support this consensus,” he added.
Kawu, an engineer, previously served at the Rural Electrification Agency as Director of Projects, Procurement, Monitoring and Evaluation before retiring from public service. He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
The PDP’s move comes less than 24 hours after the All Progressives Congress adopted Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election, setting the stage for an early political contest in the state.
