Uber Shuts Down Operations in Nigeria 

Ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced the shutdown of its operations in Nigeria following a review of its business activities in the country.

The company said its Nigerian operations would cease effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Uber disclosed the decision in a message sent to drivers on Wednesday, informing them that they would no longer receive rider trip requests through the Uber app from the effective date.

The company described the decision as difficult and expressed appreciation to its drivers for their contributions to its operations in Nigeria over the years.

Uber also acknowledged the role of its drivers in providing transportation services to Nigerians, saying their commitment had helped keep cities moving safely and affordably.

Although the company attributed the shutdown to a review of its business, it did not provide further details on the specific factors that informed the decision.

Uber said its Help Centre would remain available until September 24, 2026, to assist drivers with questions concerning the shutdown.

The exit marks the end of Uber’s presence in Nigeria and represents a major development in the country’s ride-hailing industry, where app-based transport services have become an important part of urban mobility.

Uber launched its service in Lagos in 2014 and subsequently expanded its presence in Nigeria’s growing ride-hailing market.
