Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz Over Continuous US Blockade

Iran has once again shut down the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, citing ongoing United States restrictions on its ports as the primary trigger for the move.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Iranian military authorities declared that control of the waterway—through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply passes—has reverted to a “restricted status.” This announcement was accompanied by reports that Iranian patrol boats fired upon a commercial tanker attempting to navigate the strait.

The renewed closure came only hours after the passage had briefly reopened, allowing more than a dozen commercial vessels to transit following a US-brokered 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The abrupt reversal has intensified uncertainty in an already volatile region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described the US blockade of Iranian ports as “acts of piracy and maritime theft,” emphasizing that access to the strait is now under stringent military oversight. Authorities warned that normal navigation would not resume until Iranian vessels are granted unrestricted movement to and from international destinations.

Despite the tensions, maritime tracking indicated that at least eight oil and gas tankers successfully crossed the strait by mid-morning on Saturday. However, a comparable number of vessels reportedly altered course and retreated from the الخليج (Gulf), reflecting widespread caution among shipping operators.

The fluctuating situation has cast doubt on recent optimism expressed by US President Donald Trump, who had suggested that a broader agreement to end hostilities involving Iran was imminent. While welcoming the temporary reopening of the strait a day earlier, Trump also signaled that military action could resume if negotiations stalled.

Iranian officials, however, maintain that no timeline has been agreed for further talks and accuse Washington of undermining diplomatic efforts. The lack of clarity has contributed to conflicting signals regarding the safety and accessibility of the waterway.

Maritime analysts note that inconsistent messaging from all sides has created operational ambiguity for shipping companies. Many vessels, initially attempting to transit the strait, are now opting to withdraw amid fears of escalation.

From Tehran, observers describe the situation as highly fluid, with broader geopolitical demands—including sanctions relief, security guarantees, and nuclear negotiations—remaining unresolved. The fragile environment continues to complicate prospects for a sustained diplomatic breakthrough, leaving the future of one of the world’s most vital (oil) corridors uncertain
