Argentina and Egypt will battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they meet in a Round of 16 clash on Tuesday in Atlanta.
The defending champions enter the encounter as favourites but are expected to face a stern test from an Egyptian side seeking to reach the last eight for the first time in their history.
Lionel Scaloni’s men were pushed to the limit in the previous round, edging Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time, while Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Australia.
All eyes will be on the much-anticipated showdown between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Egypt talisman Mohamed Salah. Messi has been instrumental in Argentina’s campaign, while Salah has inspired the Pharaohs with his leadership and creativity.
Argentina will rely on the experience of players such as Emiliano Martinez, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martinez as they aim to continue their title defence. Egypt, meanwhile, will look to Salah, Omar Marmoush and Emam Ashour to trouble the South American giants.
Despite Argentina’s status as favourites, head coach Lionel Scaloni has warned against underestimating Egypt, stressing that there are no easy opponents left in the competition and describing the tournament as highly competitive.
The winner of the tie will advance to the quarter-finals, where either Switzerland or Colombia awaits.
