Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has emerged as the leading choice in separate online polls on the 2027 Gombe State governorship election, recording a commanding margin over other contenders.
The development comes days after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, published the personal particulars of candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country.
Mr Pantami is among the candidates listed for the Gombe governorship contest, alongside other nominees, including former Deputy Governor Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna and Bala Bello Tinka.
In one of the online polls conducted by journalist Mustapha Musa Kaita of TRT Afrika, Pantami polled 521 votes out of 676 responses, representing 77.07 per cent.
Mr Gwamna came a distant second with 92 votes, representing 13.61 per cent, while 63 responses, or 9.32 per cent, were recorded as invalid.
A subsequent poll conducted by Gombawa, a platform focused on developments in Gombe State, produced an even wider margin for the former minister.
As of 6:32am on Monday, August 31, 2026, Pantami had secured 48,968 votes out of 58,358 votes cast, representing 83.91 per cent of the total.
Mr Gwamna had 7,213 votes, representing 12.36 per cent, while Dr Tinka polled 2,177 votes, or 3.73 per cent.
The figures mean that Pantami had attracted more than four out of every five votes cast in the Gombawa poll, with his tally exceeding the combined votes recorded by the other two contenders.
Although online polls cannot be equated with formal opinion polls or the actual election, the results have added to growing public attention around the former minister’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 contest.
The polls also come amid increasing political activities in Gombe, where aspirants, political parties and supporters have begun positioning themselves ahead of the election.
Mr Pantami’s supporters have pointed to his record in public service and his profile as a former federal minister as factors behind the growing interest in his candidacy.
His political activities and appearances at public events in the state have also continued to attract attention, particularly among youths and women.
The online polls have, however, not provided a scientific measurement of the overall voting intentions of Gombe residents, as participation was voluntary and largely limited to users who had access to and chose to participate in the respective exercises.
Political observers also note that several factors will determine the eventual outcome of the election, including party structures, grassroots mobilisation, voter registration, the geographical spread of support, campaign organisation and voter turnout.
Previous online polls in Nigeria have sometimes reflected political trends but have also varied considerably in their methodology, reach and accuracy.
As such, the latest figures should be treated as an indication of the preferences of participants rather than a prediction of the final election result.
For now, however, the figures from the two separate exercises show a striking consistency: Pantami has emerged as the dominant choice among those who participated, leading his closest rival by wide margins.
With the 2027 election still ahead, the coming months are expected to provide a clearer picture of whether the momentum reflected in the online polls can translate into sustained grassroots support and, ultimately, votes at the ballot box.
