The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka chapter, has suspended its industrial action following the payment of the full August 2026 salaries to its members.
The union announced the suspension on Friday, September 11, after members had withdrawn their academic and administrative services from the university on September 7 over the salary dispute.
In a statement signed by the ASUU UNIZIK Branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union confirmed that the outstanding payment had been made to all affected members.
The branch consequently directed lecturers to immediately return to their academic and administrative responsibilities, including teaching, lectures, supervision, marking, committee meetings and submission of students’ results.
The union said its decision followed a resolution reached by its congress and commended members for what it described as their unity, discipline and resolve throughout the industrial action.
ASUU had earlier invoked the standing resolution of its National Executive Council, which empowers branches to withdraw their services when salaries are not paid after the third day of the following month.
The UNIZIK chapter had said the delay in payment had occurred more than three times and described the situation as frustrating for its members.
However, the university management subsequently offered a different explanation, stating that the lecturers’ basic salaries remained intact and that the dispute was connected to the payment of their Earned Academic Allowance.
The university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, said the institution was facing funding constraints that affected its ability to pay the allowance in full. He explained that the university spends a substantial amount monthly on the allowance but had experienced a shortfall in its internally generated revenue.
With the outstanding payment now settled, ASUU UNIZIK has called off the strike and instructed its members to resume their normal duties with immediate effect.
The development brings an end to the latest disruption at the institution and allows academic activities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University to continue.
